On June 21st I found myself at a workshop organised by the Transnational Institute in Mandalay where A group of 15 civil society organisations (CSOs) composed and released a statement calling for the government to hold off on signing new bilateral investment treaties with the European Union and others. They concluded that the proposed regulations of such agreements could have a “chilling effect” on policy making. This article in the Myanmar Times, for which I was interviewed, discusses the group’s demands and some of the worries associated with BITs and their investor-state dispute settlement mechanism.
