Impact Assessments – The Edge Review

While the development of an environmental conservation law is good news for Myanmar, the lack of implementing procedures and the ESIA guidelines means that in practice its is up to companies to regulate themselves. This week’s Edge Review, in its article ‘Bracing for Impact’, notes that the investment climate in Myanmar is undergoing significant growing pains and that the dearth of regulation is undermining the certainty and stability needed to attract investment. It also notes the role of the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation, which has drafted investment law that could undermine stringent environmental protections in the future.
